About the festival
Since its beginnings in 2010, the Dalkey Book Festival presented by Zurich has become a landmark event in the literary and arts calendar. Described by Salman Rushdie as "the best little festival in the world", each year the festival hosts a unique line up of internationally renowned literary figures and guest speakers. The annual event attracts thousands of people from all over the world to the pretty seaside town of Dalkey in South Co. Dublin and continues to grow in size and popularity each year. The Dalkey Book Festival presented by Zurich was set up by Sian Smyth and David McWilliams in 2010. Since then, the festival has hosted an impressive selection of speakers and a diverse mix of renowned writers including Booker Prize winning authors, a Nobel Laureate, Impac and Oscar winners and Tony award nominees.
Dalkey has a rich literary heritage including the birthplace of George Bernard Shaw, the schoolhouse of James Joyce and it was once the playground to Samuel Beckett and Flann O'Brien. Dalkey is also home to distinguished Irish writers and directors such as Joseph O'Connor, Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan making it the perfect spot for a literary festival of books and ideas.
