Foreign Travel Cover
Car insurance when travelling abroad
As standard Private Car insurance policies extend policy cover while you are driving your car in Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. In addition, we also provide the minimum level of compulsory cover - Third Party Liability cover - when driving within the European Union.
However, if you need to protect your vehicle against loss or damage from fire, theft or accident whilst driving in Europe, we can provide different levels of cover to meet your needs. Our standard European Cover applies automatically to Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus policyholders – whereby you are covered for damage to your car, provided ding that the duration of your travel outside of the Republic of Ireland does not exceed 30 days.
Customers who have purchased our Comprehensive Plus cover can also avail of our exceptional Extended Foreign Travel Package for an additional premium. This optional benefit also provides cover for your car whilst you are driving in the European Union, but for an extended period of up to 60 consecutive days. Along with this, we will also provide you with our Emergency Roadside Assistance service in case of a mechanical or electrical breakdown*.
Additionally, if your car can’t be driven, we will arrange and pay for an emergency call out and up to one hour’s service by a local repairer. If your car cannot be repaired at the scene, we can arrange and pay for:
- Onward transportation for you and any passenger to your home or to your intended destination
- Overnight accommodation for up to four nights.
- Car hire for up to four days while your car is being repaired.
In the unfortunate event that your car cannot be repaired before your journey home, we will endeavour to transport it back to your home address in Ireland within three weeks, up to a maximum cost of €750.
Please note that the Extended Foreign Travel Package can only be purchased at the inception or renewal of your Comprehensive Plus policy with us. This benefit cannot be added to your policy during the period of insurance. For full details on the cover, limits, and restrictions, please refer to your schedule of insurance to confirm that the cover applies to your policy, and your policy booklet.
